Modern caravans come in many different shapes and sizes. For examples of major types of caravan see below:-

Conventional (standard) caravan
Standard caravans usually are single axle and are between 3 and 6.5 metres long. The interior layout varies greatly but generally they can sleep from two and six people. As standard modern vans will have a washroom, featuring a toilet, handbasin and on more upmarket models a full shower. A kitchen area with sink, hob and some sort of worktop are fairly standard too. Most caravans in the UK are in fact British built (unusual nowadays as the UK manufacturing industry is in a severe slump in other products). However some foreign manufacturers are starting to make inroads into the UK market mainly European and American manufacturers.

The top UK manufacturers are Elddis, Lunar, Bailey, Coachman, Swift, Vanmaster – these are the big 6 in terms of manufacturers and the majority of the caravans you see for sale (new or used) will be from one of these manufacturers. However there are other popular caravan companies such as Adria, Caravelair, Knaus, Sterckeman, TECDethleffs, Hymer and Geist.

Twin Axle Caravans
Twin Axle Caravan, The twin axle design is used for bigger, heavier caravans making them easier to tow and more stable, but obviously harder to manoeuvre due to increased size and weight. Twin axle set ups are great for larger families or for those who use their caravans a lot – that extra space and storage makes life a lot more comfortable! Coachman, Elddis, Lunar, Bailey and Swift Group all offer twin axle caravans for sale.

Pop top caravans
Still around but much less popular than they used to be, pop top caravans use a pop up roof to increase headroom in a small caravan. This allows the caravan to be smaller and have much less frontal area meaning less drag and much better fuel consumption. Another majoer advantage is that they will fit in most conventional garages for winter storage. The most popular manufacturer is Eriba from Europe.

Tear Drop Trailers
These tiny but oh so stylish teardrop trailers are something of a modern classic. Exteremely popular with people who just want the basic essentials, i.e. A double bed with modest cooking facilities and perhaps a small sink, also popular with those who do not wish to tow large vans or purchase a seperate vehicle specifically for towing. These teardrop trailers can be towed by small sports cars and even trikes! manufacturers of teardrop trailers include Teardrop Trailers, The Pod and Stimson Designs.

Imagine having your own mobile space, able to pack up and head for new horizons! Caravans are as popular in the Uk as they ever have been with new smaller rigs, perfect for first time buyers, being the hottest trend of all. teardrop or egg shaped caravans are comfy for two and have all the mod cons of bigger vans in a more compact package..

The chassis is constructed with a plywood base for wheel axle which is zinc coated to vprotect against corrosion, a metallic laminate floor is then added and wheels are bolted on underneath. lots of storage is built in with storage under beds and units. Modern heating systems can be fitted for all year round camping and when used in conjunction with the high insulation levels (typically polystyrene) these vans are cosy even in the middle of a typical british winter.

A teardrop caravan was used to break the caravan land speed record, although manufacturer safe speed limit is 130kmh, in Germany Harry Mueller set the record in Nov 2004 of 230kmh!!!

Originally designed back in the 1950′s this shape is having something of a revival, with aluminium body and funky plastic trim these teardrop caravans appeal to young buyers in particular.

Each brand has its own unique appeal. The current model line up in the Swift range are the Charisma, Challenger and Conqueror, but its the older Swift Corniche caravan model we will focus on here.

For those new to caravanning the Swift Corniche caravan is an ideal first buy, you can pick up an early 80′s model now for less than £1000. This is a great buy for those looking to try caravanning, you can actually buy a caravan complete with everything you need to use it for the whole family, year after year, for less than the price of a single foreign holiday! Although getting a bit long in the tooth these days the Swift corniche caravan was a top of the range model in its day packed with all the features you would expect, so you get a lot of caravan for your cash and many current owners report few if any problems even with 20 year old vans in regular use!

Features which are now standard that we take for granted on modern caravans (such as Washroom/Toilet Area with seperate shower, water heater, fridge/freezer and TV viewing points) were pioneered by the luxury caravans of the past such as the Swift Corniche caravan!

Bailey Caravans was founded back in 1948 and is the longest running UK caravan manufacturer and number one caravan brand in the UK accounting for one in three of all new caravan sales. The Bailey caravan ranger brand is synonomous with value for money. The ranger series is essentially a range of well designed and equipped touring homes which are attractive to a new generation of caravanners due to their affordability (A Bailey caravan ranger series is the best selling new caravan for buyers trying caravanning for the first time). The latest Ranger series 5 range includes eight different models.

All Bailey ranger caravans are supplied with a six year integrity guarantee on the bodyshell to provide long term peace of mind.

The Ranger series benefits from full width panoramic front window and tilting sunroofs combined with contemporary interiors. Specifications (for a budget caravan) are exceptionally high, most models come with a new Thetford 96 litre fridge as standard for example. All this at a very competitive recommended retail price, means the Bailey caravan ranger series sets new standards in the class for a value for money caravan.

This attention to detail coupled with value for money has resulted in the Bailey caravan ranger series winning many awards such as:-
